2026 Challenges
Modernizing a Classic Block – “Block Party” (quarterly)

We challenge the members to make and donate two or three blocks that modernize a classic quilt block. We intend to assemble the donated blocks into a modern set design and then finish it for donation to philanthropy.
A new challenge will be issued the first month of a quarter. Blocks will be collected at the meeting of the second month. Everyone is invited to stay after the regular meeting to participate in a group activity to layout the design. Using photographs, a member of the program committee will assemble the quilt top to be revealed during the meeting of the third month. At that time, we will ask for a volunteer to quilt and finish the piece.
We are encouraging everyone to use solid color fabrics. Prints that read solid, hand-dyed single-color fabrics, and batiks of a single color will be acceptable. Please do not use multicolor fabric, prints with high contrast in color or value, or directional prints. View Challenge Guidelines here.
Start with a classic block, try to break some rules, change the layout, scale, size, and
placement. Make it your own!
Spring Block Party
April 11, 2026 Reveal:
Start with a classic star block – any recognizable star. Using solid blue fabrics and white fabrics, create a variation of that star. Make 2-3 blcoks that measur 10-1/2″ x 10-1/2″, which will measure 10″x10″ in the finished quilt. Exlore curved lines, unbalanced points, extra or missing points, etc. Find your own style to create a unique version of a star.
See the Spring Challenge Guidelines for instructions and examples.
May 2, 2026 Collect: Bring your blocks for donation and stay after the meeting to play with different sets.
June 6, 2026 Quit Top: See what we made! Step up if you want to quilt a one-of-a-kind quilt for donation.
Results of the Winter Block Party
In February, members of the Greenville Modern Quilt Guild made and donated 71 log cabin improv blocks. That is enough to assemble 3 seperate quilts. We look forward to seeing them after quilting. As each quilt top is completed, it will be shown at the regular guild meeting. Congratulations and well done!
Christmas in July Gift Swap

Make a small quilted piece as a gift to another quilter. Small pieces such as mug rugs, candle mats, small wall hangings are useful ways to explore modern quilting. Bring them to the July meeting, with a small, signed note about your design. We will place them in a brown paper bag for random exchanges.
